About Bay City Electric Works

Bay City Electric Works is a premier KOHLER distributor of emergency generator systems, automatic transfer switches and paralleling switchgear.

 

Bay City has Sales and Service Centers throughout California to sell KOHLER generators and Outback Power Energy Storage as well as providing generator Service for all brands, generator parts, and on-demand rental generators up to 2000kW. Bay City utilizes a Dealer Network to provide sales and service support for the Residential Generator channel in California, Nevada, and Hawaii.

Bay City was founded in 1932 and has been a KOHLER distributor for over 50 years. Bay City is owned by Rodney Lee (President – Bay City). Bay City was recently honored by Kohler Company as Generator Distributor of the Year in 2015 and Large Systems Distributor of the Year in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Rodney Lee was an Executive with KOHLER POWER prior to joining Bay City in 2007.

Our History

Year1932

Bob and Leola Norris opened Bay City Electric Works, Inc. in 1932. The business was located on University Avenue near 38th Street, in San Diego, and was centered on small appliance repair.

Year1984

On July 2, 1984, the assets of Bay City Electric Works, Inc. were purchased by CDS Electric, Inc., a newly formed California Corporation owned by Wilmer Spitzer, Wally Dier and Tom Claycomb.

Year1986

On January 1, 1986, all outstanding stocks were acquired by Tom Claycomb.

Year1988

In 1988, the corporation name was changed to Bay City Electric Works, Inc.

Year1997

In the year 1997 we were given the honor of being the Distributor of the Year for Kohler Company. Kohler Generators in San Diego has become the foundation for sales growth.

Year2001

On November 5, 2001 we moved into a new and much larger facility at 12208 Industry Road in Lakeside, CA.

Year2007

In 2007 Mark Loftin, Chuck Loftin, and Rodney Lee joined forces to purchase Bay City Electric Works from Tom Claycomb.

Year2012

In the beginning of 2012, we moved once again into our new corporate headquarters at 13625 Danielson Street in Poway, CA where we now have a total of 70 employees.

2015

Bay City was honored by Kohler Power as their Industrial Distributor of the Year.

2020

Bay City was appointed as a Distributor of Outback Power & Enersys Products in California to begin entry into the energy storage market.

2021

Kohler Power expanded Bay City’s area of responsibility to include Hawaii for Industrial and Residential products.  Rod & Kim Lee and Austin & Kara Lee acquired 100% of Bay City stock by purchasing the Loftin Family shares.

Throughout the last decade, the business has continued to grow. Major markets now center around the sales, service, and rental of standby generator systems, portable generators, RV generators, industrial engines, electric motors and associated equipment. Customers include individuals, building contractors, industrial plants, city and county governments, utility companies, and the military.
